Plan from the Macronutrient Level Up
Building a menu plan from the macronutrient level up takes some effort, but it will pay big dividends for your health and your pocketbook over the long run. This free workbook makes the process simple, practical, and easy to follow. It takes you through a series of straightforward steps to determine your ideal macronutrient targets and create a nutrition approach that fits your individual goals and lifestyle.
In the final step, you translate your macronutrient requirements into a grocery list. You might be surprised at the result. It could be a moment of reckoning for you, because you will be staring at the fact that there is little room in your diet for processed foods.
Be Flexible
I throw in a couple of processed foods on my pantry list anyway. For example, french-fried onions are on my list. This is because it is hard to reproduce a savory flavor with either onion powder or freeze-dried onion flakes. Try to cook satisfying main meals without onions–it’s not happening! Just because I have to fall back on shelf-stable ingredients for meals doesn’t mean everyone has to suffer. French-fried onion rings fill in adequately for savory-ness. If there were a run on my local supermarket, I would immediately clean out the produce department of all its onions and garlic, and perhaps potatoes, too. Onions will keep up to 3 months if stored properly in a cool, dark place. They are “shelf stable” in their own way. Potatoes can last up to 8 months stored properly (but must be kept away from onions that give off ethylene gas which will cause potatoes to spoil).
But back to the “reckoning”… A macronutrient-based menu plan will point out your wayward ways. If you build a menu plan simply from a collection of your favorite recipes, you are just reinforcing bad eating patterns. A macronutrient menu plan helps get you back on track.
